Religion
A third reason that explains the trafficking of children in the sex trade is apathy among those who claim to be religious or spiritual. Apathy among religious people of all types is a major reason why some humans in general abuse other humans and why in particular the trafficking of children in the sex trade continues to be a huge problem throughout the world. For example, professing Christians have often acted inconsistently with what they say they believe about human beings and human suffering, shown by their participation in the slave trade of Africans (1600's through the 1800's), genocide perpetuated against Native Americans and the Jewish Holocaust of the 20th century.
Ninety-Five percent (95%) of the people in SE Asia claim to be Buddhists, making Buddhism the predominant worldview in SE Asia. While it is not our intention in any way to speak ill of Buddhism or to say that Buddhism is a cause of the abuse of children in the sex slave trade, we do think it is important for those unfamiliar with Buddhism to understand the worldview dynamics predominant in SE Asia.
Buddhism is an ancient worldview, older than Christianity, which believes in ideas such as Compassion, Karma and Reincarnation. It may appear paradoxical to some unfamiliar with Buddhism that this worldview teaches that people should be compassionate to each other while also simultaneously allowing for individuals to work out and experience in this life the Karma attached to them. We believe that no major spiritual or religious worldview in the history of humanity, including Buddhism, has ever consistently practiced or taught that the trafficking of children in the sex trade is morally acceptable or a practice that humans should even passively tolerate. We also believe that the consistent application of ethical principles by followers of all major spiritual or religious worldviews would result in the virtual elimination of the organized trafficking of children in the sex trade.
